Birding - A Twitchers Dream
Find out more about bird watching opportunities in the Drakensberg Mountains.
At Molweni Kamberg, we have thus far amassed a running list of over 90 birds on the property, and list them below. Of course there are many more you can see in the area too! The valley is one of the best places in the Drakensberg to bird watch, as it is home to over 200 bird species, including several sought-after endemics and high-altitude specialists. The Kamberg really is a hidden gem for birding enthusiasts, offering a tranquil setting rich in avian diversity. We are incredibly privileged to enjoy a rich variety of birdlife, nestled within the Drakensberg foothills.
We keep a few bird books on-site for visitors to enjoy. Our favourite, because it’s a children’s book for beginners, is the beautifully illustrated Faansie’s bird book. But we also have a Roberts guide, for the more experienced birder.
Keen birders can look forward to spotting one of three Crane species, usually found around waterways. KZN is the one place where all three of these birds can be seen in the same place. If you are lucky enough to see vultures during your stay, particularly the majestic Bearded Vulture (Lammergeier) soaring above the cliffs, consider yourself very lucky indeed – as they are critically endangered. The infamous Drakensberg Rockjumper can also be seen flitting among the rocky outcrops, in season, and are usually up along the Game Pass Shelter hike.
Both the wetlands and grasslands of the Kamberg Nature Reserve also attract species such as the Wattled Crane, Malachite Sunbird, and Southern Bald Ibis.
Ask our advice on where and when to spot species, and don’t forget your cameras!
