Crane Spotting in the Kamberg
Calling our fellow "Craniacs" to discover the Cranes of the Kamberg
For the last 10 years, we’ve been trying to get up-close-and-personal with a Blue Crane, South Africa’s national bird. During our first holiday together, we drove up and down byroads in and around Greyton in the Western Cape, in an attempt to find one of these magnificent birds. At the end of our holiday, we did see a pair of Blue Cranes in a nearby field. Thankfully they flew overhead, which was just a wonderful experience.
Have you ever seen one of our three South African Cranes? Do you know how to identify them? Were you aware that each of our beautiful Crane species are critically endangered and need our help.

The Crane Conservation Centre in Nottingham Road is not far from Molweni, and it is an absolute privilege to live so close to the invaluable work being done by the KZN Crane Foundation. Needless to say, since we moved to the Kamberg, we’ve once again been taking to the roads looking for cranes!

In Spring, we were very excited to spot a family of Grey Crowned Cranes, and were luckier still, to hear and see them fly over our property a few weeks later.
The rolling hills of the Kamberg are an ideal place to do some Crane spotting! So if you are looking for an alternative adventure, take to the roads and see if you can identify a Crane for yourself.
Alternatively, visit the Bill Barnes Crane and Oribi Nature Reserve. They would greatly appreciate your support!
